Rapper Nicki Minaj recently posted this photo from the balcony of her Miami hotel room. The Blond Bombshell who was in 'The City of Sights' shooting a video for song, 'I Wanna Be With You', made a note to point out her belt by Balmain. I, however, am far more fascinated with that gorgeous crocheted, high cut dress with the beautiful pearl embellished epaulets. I grew up watching my great-grandmother and my grand-mother knit everything from doilies, to baby clothes, to tablecloths. In fact one of my most prized possessions is a wedding dress crocheted by a cousin of my great-grandmother, for another cousin. I was about aged five when I met her and at the time she was was approximately ninety-four years old. I had overheard a discussion about the dress, and so I had asked to see it. Without hesitation, Cousin Lilly graciously indulged me. Needless to say, I fell madly in love. To me it looked like the epitome of a labor of fashion love. Couture at it's finest. Detailed perfection at it highest. I never forgot that dress and always kept up with it through the family grapevine. It had been passed to her daughter upon her passing, and then to another niece after that. When I graduated college and had saved a little sum, I made an offer for the dress that luckily for me, was not refused.
When I saw Nicki's dress, my mind immediately went to that wedding dress, my little treasure, now tucked safely and neatly in a carved mahogany trunk in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica. I also remembered how my Mother and her best-friend tried their best to teach me how to thread the little steel hook to form those perfect, intricate little cotton loops, to no avail. My failure though only elevated my appreciation of the art of creating through crochet. So needless to say, I now have my eye on certain modern, sexy, crocheted version to add to my archive.
Happy Saturday!
